Birthday loot!

For Mason’s 1st birthday we decided (he didn’t get a say) that instead of gifts, we would ask our party attendees to bring a non perishable item for the Vancouver food bank.  Since we didn’t have a traditional party this year, Mason did receive some gifts from family & friends (thank you!).  Here are a few reviews of the hits!

Fisher Price - The Farmer Says & Buddy (From Cameron & Brendan)

I had a hard time finding this toy online and it appears the two toys are sold separately but we received all in one box.

Shaped like a barn, it teaches kids fun facts about 16 different animals. Kids can point the arrow and pull the lever, then flip the page for more animals to choose from! There is also a quiz mode for more learning fun. Plays “Old MacDonald” and “Farmer in the Dell” melodies. Requires 3 AA batteries (temporary batteries included).

Farmer Buddy is a fun, singing friend that you can take along with you He has soft animal friends in his pocket to play with There are four ways to play. Press the numbers for counting fun and press the question mark for a quiz game Press the music note for an interactive song! Requires 3 AA batteries (temporary batteries included).

Mason is really into Thomas the Train so he received:

Thomas & Friends Thomas Bath Tracks (From Mommy)

This tub toy is loaded with fun water features! Free-wheeling Thomas rolls along the track. Lift the crossing-gate so Thomas can splash-down! You can pour water to spin the water wheel or wash Thomas down with the water tower strainer! All the pieces are the perfect size for little hands. Playset attaches easily to tub wall.

I bought this at Walmart for under $20.  Mason currently has plastic toys  in the tub meant for the beach & sand.  He really enjoys playing with the funnel but because it’s not meant for the bath, it’s kind of awkward to hold.  I figured that this toy was similar.

Mason’s rating – It definitely encouraged him to get into the shower this morning!  He liked the Thomas plastic train but the toy was a bit on the boring side.  Because it’s angled, the train flies through the tracks and he didn’t really dump the water in the wheel (on the far left).  The little ‘top’ of the silo? Doesn’t hold enough water to keep him interested so I gave him another toy to dump water in it.  We’ll try this again during a bath (opposed to a shower).  It says good for 18 mo+ and may be too young for a 2 year old.

From my recent post of ‘Hidden Treasures’, we know Mason likes to play with tools.  Finally he has a set of his own!

Mason received:

Fisher Price Drillin’ Action Tool Set (From Lizehl & Carter)

The power drill lets boys drill & remove screws - with forward & reverse spinning action! Use one of two interchangeable drill bits: corkscrew drill or phillips head. Drill the included screws into the holes on the tool caddy. Or use the hammer to pound nails into the holes. The set includes: power drill with two bits, three screws, a hammer, three nails and a tool caddy for easy storage and take along play.  Comes with temporary batteries.

Mason absolutely LOVED this toy.  He figured it out right away.  My only question is what the second drill bit is supposed to do? It doesn’t fit into either screw head.  He had fun using the claw hammer to remove the nails.  This is an awesome toy for a 2 year old!  You can watch Mason play with this toy here.

Another favourite of Mason’s is lego/duplo.  He says ‘ye-eggo’.  They have quite a bit of it at daycare and he’s always into it.

Mason received:

Firetruck by Lego (From Auntie Katy & Uncle Dennis)

  • 26-Piece set includes 2 DUPLO figures, ladder and fire truck
  • Matches the developing skills and interests of children ages 1-1/2 and up
  • Encourages creative thinking and logic skills through an awareness of action and reaction
  • Basic DUPLO building sets nourish young imaginations through free-form building
  • Specially designed for a preschooler's small hands

Mason has shown an interest in Dinosaurs and received:

 Soft Stegosaurus (from Ashley)

  • Ages 5+
  • Squishy Soft!
  • Measures 11"

I’d say that this toy is fine for any child over 1.  It doesn’t have any parts and it is quite soft.  Mason liked packing it around and roaring!
