Toons for Tots

Channel 43 is the only station I let Mason watch cartoons on.  Actually it’s the only station we really get cartoons on.  At my parents who have a zillion channels, there is a lot more choices for kids.  Remember growing up in the 80’s? Cartoons were on ONE channel and ONCE a week – Saturdays!  In 2011, cartoons are on 24/7!

I have a weird thing about what Mason watches.  The news – not a chance.  Looney Toons? Nope!  Yes, I know it’s a bit extreme but I just don’t think it’s appropriate to ‘play with guns’.  I *know* we all turned out fine (most of us) but I just would rather he didn’t see that stuff.  Even if it’s Bugs Bunny or Elmer Fudd (running around with a shot gun).

Treehouse TV is the approved station in this house.  It’s like my Sesame Street for today’s world.  The same cartoons cycle over and over, I swear I’ve seen most of them.

Mason’s Favorites: (in my perceived order of favorites)

  1. Mighty Machines
  2. Toopy & Binoo
  3. Caillou
  4. Max & Ruby
  5. Cat in the Hat

There are a ton of other ones that come on that he’ll watch but I wouldn’t say they are his favourite.

On the flip side, there are a few cartoons that I really have to wonder what drugs the creators were on when they thought they’d broadcast these cartoons for toddlers/young children.

I’m not going to rant about these cartoons but I just think they are outright bizarre.  I actually followed another Mom’s blog and stopped reading because she kept having this long rants about Max & Ruby and how Ruby was so rude and that they had no visible parents…blah blah blah.  It started off as funny and then it became a wee bit obsessive.  If you don’t want your kid watching Max & Ruby, turn off the tv or change the station! Sheesh!

So here is the list of weirdo shows:

In the Night Garden.  I’m not sure what a Ninky Nonk is and the guys voice is a tad bit creepy.  Iggle Piggle and its friend (no genders?)  Upsy daisy.  It’s got a few other friends and they play in the forest.  Have a look: http://tinyurl.com/3shmr2m

The Wot Wots.  I thought this was actually the other cartoon but apparently they are different.   These guys are little aliens and say ‘wotty wot a lot’.  I think it would be a cute cartoon if they said more than Wotty Wot!  They also live in the forest.

I like this one wayyyy better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8yFmTTPyEk&feature=related

I’m having a hard time writing this blog.  As soon as I have the cartoons playing on YouTube, Mason comes running over and wants to sit on my lap and watch lol.

Yo Gabba Gabba. I feel like I’ve been teleported into the 70’s.  It’s a combo of people in mascot costumes and real people.  I *think* they are aliens.  They do a lot of singing.  Mason apparently likes them as he said ‘yo gabba gabba’.  Had no clue he knew them, they must watch them at school.

Waybuloo is the last one I've watched and thought wtf.  They have this weird clock/wind chime thing that I'm not about.  Little alien characters with cute little British accents.  they kinda float around in the air and sometimes have 'real' kids interact with them.  The chime thing just throws me off.

I’m throwing Thomas the Train on this list.  I know Mason likes the train part of it but have you actually watched the show? In retail land, ttt is huge.  So much merchandise and theme parties…but seriously.  They use real train terminology which I think is good but way over my head let alone the kids.  The voices absolute creep me out.  And the train mouths don’t move!  Well of course they don’t, trains don’t HAVE lips.  Yet, they talk.  Weird.
